BOTOX and Dysport are 2 of the most popular wrinkle-reduction treatment options, smoothing expression lines that add years to your appearance. They both temporarily immobilize the muscles you use to squint, frown, appear surprised, and make other facial expressions. However, distinct characteristics influence how long it takes BOTOX and Dysport to work—and how long they last.

How Fast Does BOTOX Work? What About Dysport?

BOTOX usually takes about a week to show its full effects. Dysport typically works faster, with effects visible within 2 to 3 days after your appointment. Dysport’s quicker results can be attributed to its smaller molecular size and ability to diffuse more easily. These features allow Dysport to act more rapidly on the targeted muscles.

This isn’t true for all patients, of course. Your response to the treatment can vary based on your metabolism, muscle strength, the specific area being treated, and other individual factors. Some people may experience faster results with BOTOX, while others might notice Dysport working more quickly.

How Long Do BOTOX Results Last Compared to Dysport?

The truth is that the answer varies from person to person. We offer both products at our dermatology practice, and you can expect either neuromodulator to last about 3 or 4 months on average. For some people, the muscles can stay relaxed for up to 6 months. Others with very strong muscles don’t seem to hold the product for as long.

The treatment area also affects the durability of your results. Some studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that BOTOX may last slightly longer in certain areas, particularly in smaller, more targeted regions like around the eyes. The longevity of your results can also vary depending on your metabolism and the dosage used.

Which Is Right for You?

The choice comes down to which product you prefer. Both are safe, excellent options, whether you’re in your 20s or 30s and want to prevent fine lines from becoming more prominent or you’re a bit older and want to smooth deeper wrinkles in the forehead, between the brows, around the eyes, and at the corners of the mouth. You can discuss your concerns and aesthetic goals with one of our board-certified dermatologists, and they can recommend the treatment they believe will produce the best results.

You can also get BOTOX injections to treat concerns other than wrinkles, as we wrote about in this earlier blog post.
