Unique Skin Deserves Unique Treatment

Much like your fingerprint or the dimensions of your smile, your skin is unique and a distinctive part of who you are. A number of different variables impact the skin, not just in the way it looks—but also in the way it functions and feels. Many people want their skin to look its best, and as a dermatologist in Dallas, I help patients of all ages learn how to work with the skin they have, no matter its type or texture.

The condition of your skin can reveal attributes such as age, ethnic background, lifestyle habits, and even the climate where you live. Understanding your own skin type is the first step in determining skincare treatments and products most appropriate for you. However, the amount of available information can be overwhelming and hard to apply to your particular situation.

For example, “acne-prone” skin is a broad descriptor that doesn’t automatically suggest a specific treatment plan. Acne can have many or a combination of causes, including hormones, heredity, age, and more. Additionally, the techniques you used to manage your outbreaks as a teenager may no longer work when you’re in your 20s or 30s.

On the other hand, terms such as “oily” or “dry” may not sufficiently describe your skin. Many people have skin that is oily in some areas and dry in others, so finding a product that helps with each condition can be confusing. And you may find that a product or technique that works for a friend or family member may not work for you. Experimenting with products can be time-consuming and costly and may even turn you off from skin care altogether. Don’t despair! We want to help.

If you’re curious about your own skin, a visit with me or another of our skincare specialists is a great way to establish a baseline on which to build your regimen. Creating your own skincare routine isn’t as difficult as you may think.

During your appointment, you and your specialist will have an in-depth discussion about your skincare history and specific questions. We’ll examine your skin and may use a small handheld magnifier called a dermatoscope to look closely at areas of special concern. Expect to talk about any medications or supplements you use, what your lifestyle is like (your hobbies, for example, can give us clues about things like sun exposure), and what’s possible for your skin.

At the end of your appointment, we’ll discuss the products that we think can help you achieve your goals—whether they’re medical-grade skincare products or simpler items you can find at the drugstore. We may also recommend a clinical treatment, such as laser skin resurfacing, for more significant improvement. We offer several effective treatments to address conditions related to sun damage and more severe signs of aging.
